Athens is one of the oldest incorporated cities in the State of Alabama, having been incorporated one year prior to the state's admittance to the Union in 1819. Many homes in the central part of modern Athens date to the antebellum period, and are part of historic preservation districts. The Robert Beaty District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and Athens sponsors walking tours of this neighborhood. The annual Dogwood Festival is held in April and is sponsored by the Athens-Limestone Beautification Board. The Homespun arts and crafts festival is also held in April at the campus of the Athens Bible School. This campus also hosts the two-day Music Explosion held each spring. The Athens Sportsplex holds eight baseball fields, five soccer fields, disc golf, a swimming pool and the Kids Dugout. Athens State University is located in this small town. This is Alabama’s oldest institution of higher learning, founded in 1822. It has an undergraduate enrollment of 3,100.
